2015 ICC Cricket World Cup

The 2015 World Cup is already in its third week. After initial one sided encounters we have seen some interesting contests in last few days.  The initial 3 world cups were played in England with 8 participant countries. The format was simple with teams divided into 2 groups of 4 teams each. I started following World Cup in 1983 edition. During this world cup, the 4 countries in each group played each other twice. The matches were played alternate days with day in between those matches served as reserve day in case the weather didn't allow the match on prior day to complete. The advantage of this format was that at a given point of time, all countries would have played same number of matches; hence point table would not paint unrealistic picture.  1987 Reliance World Cup was the first edition when World Cup moved out of England. Slowly with each editions, commercialization took over and number of participant countries was increased to please the associate nations. The sche...

Another Test and Another Defeat!!!

In my college days, I was very sensitive to Indian cricket team performance. After looking at my disappointment after yet another Indian loss, one of my friends commented that only those people who don't have their own achievements in their lives rely on Indian cricket team's so rare heroics. I took that comment very seriously and over period of time made conscious effort to reduce my dependency on Indian team's performance to retain my happy state of my mind. I have tried to reduce time spent in front of television set when India is not performing well and try to indulge in any activity which would give me any sense of achievement. Still that small amount of disappointment always stays. The fact remains that Indian Test cricket team is in pathetic state when it comes down to performing in overseas conditions. We don't have bowlers which have discipline and consistency to take those 20 wickets. Batsmen have lost that concentration over years due to excessive limited o...

Series of Meaningless Cricket Matches

Of late Indian cricket team and its players have been involved in series of meaningless matches. The real meaningful test cricket was played in England during which Indian team was beaten comprehensively by English team. Soon our players were involved in Champions League Matches. Despite the attendance it received, I doubt if spectators were really interested in quality of game played or result for that matter.  Right now Indian cricket team is in middle of home series against West Indies. Only Indian cricket Board knows how this series (which is played on flat tracks and much smaller grounds) will help cause of Indian cricket team during World cup to be played in Australia in early 2015. It is also appalling to see number of columns written by former cricketers analyzing such meaningless series.  In short we are killing Cricket as a game by its overdose. I am still positive to see the real cricket preserved in countries like New Zealand, South Africa, England and Australia...

Weekend of Father Son Pairs

The limelight was clearly taken by youngsters in Kanga League matches played on different grounds in Mumbai. Musheer Khan, most probably the youngest player to play Kanga league took 5 for 78 and then batted for almost an hour to save match. Incidentally his father was also playing in the same team. While it is appreciable that he is able to perform well with men at very young age of 8, it is really difficult to understand why we need to hurry a young boy so early to professional sports world. Another pair of son-father in action over weekend was Tendulkars'. As Sachin as said, if we let Arjun play his own game, he definitely has potential to become good cricket player. Let's stop the comparison. CSK was very professional in relatively difficult chase of 186 with Raina and Hussey playing major roles. The prolonged lean patch of Vijay has become a cause of concern and he may find it difficult to break back into Indian team. Yuvraj continues to be fully involved in India A ma...
