NPL 2024 Super Senior League Winners - NES 1988 - A Memorable Journey - Part 1

New English School 1988 Batch won its first NPL title on 27th April 2024. It has been a long journey for this team who started practicing in 2008. I will be bringing series of article in coming days related to this journey.

Here is the first in the series describing the practice sessions this team used to have in Suruchi Batch in 2008 - 2009.

  1. NCL 26-APR-2009

Lies, Super Over and Bowl Outs

Teams –

Rakesh, Vishal Patil (Captain), Rupesh, Yogesh, Guest1
Aditya, Hemant Buwa, Vaibhav Babrekar, Sanjay Patil (Captain), Guest2

Absentee

Deepak Kadam – Found guarding his car at Beach Parking Lot. He was so protective about the car that he couldn’t leave it to join veterans.

Sujit Devkar – Still practicing hard so that he can perform well next time he visits NCL

Arun Goilkar – Went to native place

Weather condition – Humid, Low Tide

Highlights

  • Yogesh, Rupesh reached beach at 6:00 A.M.
  • The AIRTEL network was down in morning. So many of the veterans didn’t get the wake up calls. As a result they were more than happy to continue their morning sleep.
  • Aditya, Rakesh had to wake up sponsor to collect cricket kit
  • Rupesh is keen to play over arm cricket. So Yogesh, Rupesh, Aditya and Rakesh started playing over arm cricket for first 45 minutes. Two guests joined them.
  • Nothing spectacular in over arm cricket. Aditya had some huge hits and Sanjay Patil dropped many catches. As the other veterans arrived, the demand for box cricket grew louder. So the veterans moved to box cricket version

Match 1

  • Sanjay Patil won the toss and elected to bat first
  • Sanjay’s team scored only 14. Rakesh bowled well
  • Aditya got out by hitting ball outside the box.
  • Sanjay, Vaibhav and Hemant got out without giving much significant contribution.
  • Aditya started bowling from Sanjay’s team. Rakesh scored 5 from first over. The guest2 was out on last ball of Aditya’s over by hitting ball out of box.
  • The Guest1 from Sanjay’s team mis-fielded on 3 occasions giving 12 runs.
  • All the 15 runs from Vishal’s team were scored by Rakesh which is NCL record.

Match 2

  • Vishal’s team came to bat first. Rakesh was opener again. Aditya started bowling. Rakesh got out this time hitting ball outside box
  • Good bowling from Sanjay team had Vishal team in spot of bother at 12 for 4. But two consecutive boundaries in last over resulted in a respectable score of 20.
  • Sanjay and guest opened the innings with no one aware of the drama to be followed. Sanjay got out soon and Aditya joined the crease. A couple and a boundary from Aditya took score to double figure.
  • Rakesh came into attack and Aditya played a spectacular pull shot towards between square leg and mid on. The instant reaction from Rakesh indicated that ball had landed inside boundary line before crossing fence. A lot of argument followed. Eventually Aditya refused to be given out and play resumed. Aditya was compared with Yudhishtir from Mahabharat who lied only once in life. Hemant Buva taking advantage of this chaos, increased score by one.
  • Now only one was needed from one over, with Vishal coming to bowl the last over. Vaibhav was bowled on second ball leaving Aditya to finish the job. Aditya played a defensive shot on third ball. With tension mounting Aditya tried to play an attacking shot only to find Yogesh holding on to a spectacular catch at point. The match had ended in a tie.
  • The Box cricket rules Guru, Hemant Buva advised that Super over was the order of the day. The teams had to announce their bowler for the super over. Hemant and Aditya were nominated as batsman and bowler from Sanjay XI whereas Yogesh and Rakesh were nominated from Vishal XI
  • Yogesh bowled an excellent over in which no run was conceded in first 5 balls. Finally on last ball Hemant managed to score a boundary. Now pressure was on Aditya to restrict Rakesh to score of 4. Aditya bowled a tight length to restrict Rakesh to 2 in first 5 balls. But on last ball couldn’t prevent a couple. So it was again a tie
  • The Box cricket rules Guru, Hemant Buva again chipped in with concept of bowl out. Same bowler from the teams would be given an over to bowl and one who manages to disturb the timber for maximum number of times would be declared as winner. Aditya started and managed to hit the stumps with every single delivery. Two times the ball in fact landed out side leg stump and then managed to turn back on the stumps. Yogesh could not cope up with pressure of hitting the stumps with every delivery and bowled the first ball itself outside stump. Sanjay’s team had won 6-0 in bowl out. That reminded us of India Pakistan bowl in T20 world cup with India winning by similar margin. The truth had finally prevailed.
  • The lowest score of 5 by Deepak Kadam’s team is still unbroken.

NCL Veterans defeats Vithal Vihar XI on basis of net run rate.

Teams –

NCL Veterans - Rakesh, Hemant Buwa, Vaibhav Babrekar, Vishal Patil (Injured), Aditya, Arun Goilkar, Hemant Rajgor, Deepak Kadam, Sanjay Patil (Average Age – 36)

Vithal Vihar Under 17 (Average Age – 16)

Absentee – Rupesh, Yogesh and Sujit. Anoop did not turn up from Pune

Weather condition – Humid, Low Tide

Highlights
•     First International Match in which NCL veterans locked horns with Vithal Vihar Juniors.

•     Arun Goilkar’s debut at NCL! Welcome Arun to NCL

Match 1

NCL captain Rakesh won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening pair started well scoring cautiously at rate between 4 -5 runs per over. There was change of umpire in between as Hemant Rajgor replaced Vishal Patil. Arun Goilkar was batting well in his first outing in NCL. Hemant Buwa involved in couple of run outs. Aditya scored boundary on first ball he faced but then was bowled on next ball. Few boundaries in the end gave NCL veterans a good score of 28. The youngsters were too hot for NCL veterans to handle as they scored few boundaries in the initial overs. But excellent fielding at boundary by Rakesh, Arun, Hemant Buwa, Deepak Kadam restricted the score to such an extent that match interest was alive. The equation was reduced to 8 runs to win in 2 over. Hemant Buwa used his 15+ years of box cricket experience to concede only 1 run in penultimate over and grabbing 3 wickets. The equation looked interesting with 7 to win from last over. Aditya came to bowl the last over. He was no balled on his first delivery as he didn’t specify his side to umpire (right arm over the wicket). The argument between two teams resulted in NCL veterans’ favor and the equation was 7 from 5 balls, the second ball was wicket ball and now it was 7 from 4 balls. A single on third ball took the required run rate to 12 runs per over. The forth ball was driven in covers for declared 2. And 4 runs were needed from last two balls. The penultimate ball was driven to long on and Arun positioned himself to save the boundary but the enthusiastic dive from Hemant Rajgor diverted the ball outside the boundary line and NCL veterans lost a closely contested match.

Match 2

Undeterred by loss in first match, NCL veterans regrouped themselves. Vithal Vihar XI decided to bat first. Hemant Rajgor bowled excellent first over. Deepak created sensation by capturing 3 wickets in his penultimate over. Aditya didn’t let score go beyond reasonable limit by bowling steady last over. Good disciplined bowling accompanied by excellent fielding on boundary line by NCL veterans restricted the score to 24.

Aditya opened the innings on public demand. A lot of time was taken by VV XI to set the fielding to him and that resulted in lack of concentration by him and he was bowled on first ball. Rakesh hit two boundaries and a couple to take score to 10. Arun Goilkar who was at non striker’s end was run out on fifth ball. Vaibahv Babrekar faced the first three balls of second over without scoring run. Aditya shouted from outside boundary to call him back. That upset Vaibhav so much that he was bowled on next ball. Aditya’s objective was served. Experienced Hemant Buwa scored calmly most of the remaining runs and NCL veterans won the match sparing one over. That resulted in better run rate to NCL veterans in series and the Beach Trophy. The NCL captain Rakesh will be given the beach trophy next Sunday.

Strategy for Next Sunday

    1. While batting, hit the ball so forcefully on ground such that it would bounce high outside the boundary line.
    2. Don’t attempt single when a ball is hit with power. In this case there are two possibilities either the ball crosses boundary or is fielded by fielder the possibility of run out exists.

  1. NCL 05-APR-2009

Teams –

Rakesh, Hemant Buwa, Vaibhav Babrekar, Vishal Patil, Rupesh
Hemant Rajgor, Deepak Kadam, Yogesh, Sujit Devkar, Sanjay Patil

Absentee – Aditya –found watching test match between IND vs NZ.

Weather condition – Humid, High Tide

Highlights
•     First Tie Match at NCL
•     Deepak Kadam’s team low score of 5 last week remains unbeaten

•     New sets of balls . arrive at NCL  ( 2 by Hemant (bouncy on sand), 2-by Yogesh ( Good shot- tennis) one by Vishal regular red. Thanks all of by NCL. Hemant Rajyagor promises new set of balls which would bounce on sands. That promise turn out to be typical political party promise which never materializes.
•     Sujit Deokar ( in his Burmuda) - Rupesh arrived late, and allow to enter opposite team in between match.
•     Deepak Kadam does a la Raja Harishandra and doesn’t lie today. Experts say that he had already exhausted his quota of lies at home and office

•     Rakesh didn’t utter a truth in entire session. Experts say that he was in trouble for lying at home.

•     Sujit Devkar (M.S. Dhoni of NES team as captain and wicket keeper of first official NES CRICKET TEAM 23 YRS before) gets out on duck in both matches. Questions were raised about his selection in NES team in 1988. Rakesh alleged that quota system existed in 1988
•     Hemant Rajyagor made an excellent dive and stopped a certain boundary. It was really a spectacular effort. The root cause analysis was done on Hemant’s fielding style and it was found that he always uses his foot to stop the ball instead of his hand. Further investigations are on to find out whether he refrain himself from using HAND as it is symbol of congress party. In this particular instant also he attempted to use his feet to stop and fell down, it was sheer coincidence that the ball came in his way. This root cause analysis was done by Deepak, Yogesh and Rakesh in the afternoon on same day.
•     Rakesh came in blue shirt thinking that last week series he lost due to an outstanding fielding by his teammate Hemant Rajyagor & Deepak Kadam who always do fielding with their feet, which never save runs at all. So due to Red t-Shirt Deepak – Rajyagor remain in same team but Rakesh jump in opposite automatically

•        Rakesh was first to reach sponsor’s home at 6:00 A.M. Since these are election days, every visitor at Hemant’s home is treated with tea and Rakesh was no exception.

•        Hemant Rajgor, Rakesh, followed by  Hemant Buva, Sanjay Patil and Yogesh were first to reach beach at 6:30 P.M.
•        As practice started till quorum reached, Hemant Buwa hits some balls in sea and tiring other NCL veterans.
No bikes was allowed on to the beach as all have to park their bike on road and had 15 - 20 minutes walk to reach the pitch
Competition between Vishal & Bob of bowling most wide balls in single team as they had to ball overall 12-15 ball to finish their single over. (its effect on third match as it had to call off due to bad light..

Match 1
Rakesh won the toss. (Did he really? As the replays showed that it was actually tail but he declared as heads and declared that he had won the toss. The other veterans either struggling with sleep or with vision problems didn’t object much).

Rakesh came for opening with Buwa  and both of them hit some spectacular boundaries. Yogesh disappointed in field and did let many balls to go to boundaries. ( conclusion-  Last day he might sold entire stock of Auto oil, in his shop & oil still remained on his palm )  Sujit was good in field. Some good batting by Rakesh team resulted in final score of 28. Rupesh will have to show some pesions in box cricket as hits every ball like overarm cricket. The opponents with Sujit Devkar in their ranks were expected to give a good fight. But Sujit scored first duck of the morning followed by duck of Yogesh when they hit the ball outside the boundary. Sujit  wished it was real duck which he could have used for lunch later in day. Spineless performance by remaining batsmen from team resulted in team getting out for 15.

Match 2
Rakesh team batted first again in next match. Rakesh couldn’t ride on his luck this time and team was bowled out for 14. Sujit Devkar was again bowled for zero and a demand to verify his claims of heroics at Vasai Ground has been raised. Yogesh hits some nice stroks but outstanding fielding by Bob- Balu stopped him by not scoring much runs as last week.  Finally it was left to 5 runs in 2 balls with single man Sanjay Patil standing. In battle of Patils, Vishal bowled second last ball of match which was driven to boundary by Sanjay. Score level; ( meanwhile there was an argument between both team on it was NO BALL or NOT ) But Vishal had last laugh as he didn’t allow Sanjay to score on last ball. The match had tied. The statisticians are verifying the claim that it was the first tie match of NCL.

Attractions for next week
Likely visit of Anoop from Pune on Ester Sunday

In afternoon disussion among Sujit, Deepak, Yogesh, Rakesh idea of making UNIFORM for NCL 1988 team, Kindly forward your suggession about  and  sponsorship for same.

  1. NCL 29-MAR-2009

Since it was anniversary NCL session, nothing special was required to make it memorable. But yesterday’s action at Suruchi Bag made it most entertaining, drama packed session till date.

Timing – 6:40 A.M. – 8:00 A.M.

Players – Vishal, Rakesh, Aditya, Yogesh, Hemant Rajgor, Hemant Buwa, Sanjay Patil, Deepak Kadam, Rupesh, Sameer (Guest)

Weather –

Temperature – 25 degree Celsius, Low tide extending boundary on off side.

Vishal Patil was first one to reach Suruchi Bag at 6:30 A.M. followed by Aditya and Rakesh. The initial round of over arm cricket followed typical pattern with Aditya hitting some ground strokes before getting out to a catch in deep by Yogesh on bowling of Vishal. Rakesh batted for more than stipulated quota of 2 over and had to be whisked out of batting crease. As other veterans (like Deepak who prefers static positions) started coming in, demand for box cricket matches started growing in. Players split into Red Bulls Vs Blue Champs based on color of T-shirts.

The teams

Red Bulls – Rakesh, Hemant Rajgor, Deepak, Sanjay, Sameer (Guest)

Blue Champs – Aditya, Hemant Buwa, Rupesh, Yogesh, Vishal

Result – Blue Champs won the series by 2-1

Match 1

Aditya won the toss and decided to bat first. Hemant Buwa and Rupesh were opening batsmen. Blue Champs received a major setback when Rupesh was run out in first over followed by Aditya bowled by Deepak. After another run out involving Hemant Buwa, Blue Champs were struggling at 10 for 3. A predetermined few paddle sweeps by Vishal made sure that Blue Champs score 16 before getting bowled out. There was excitement in the beginning as bulls lost some early wickets, but after that steady batting of Rakesh and Sameer ensured easy win for Bulls. That was the last time in day when one could see Deepak smiling.

Match 2

Red Bulls batted first in the second match. Brilliant display of bowling in first over by Aditya reduced Bulls to 2/2. Another fine over by Hemant Buwa and Bulls were looking down the barrel at 3/3. Aditya came back again to send Bulls packing for lowest ever score of 5 in NCL. Deepak was seen cursing and abusing fellow team mates at times for not taking singles and other times for running partners out. Hemant Rajgor was the umpire with goggle and tried calling every ball a no ball. Vishal Patil and Yogesh were the openers. Vishal scored 4 in first 2 balls with intelligent sweep shots and then was advised by Aditya to bat out next 2-3 overs. Since this advice came too loudly, Sameer caught the ball and threw out of boundary giving blues the biggest victory in NCL till date in terms of wickets and margins. This is for the first time in history of NCL that a single batsman has scored all of opponent’s runs in first overs. It doesn’t look like that this record of lowest score would be broken in next 100 years.

Match 3

Blue Champs batted first in this series deciding tie. Aditya opened innings with Hemant Buwa. Aditya scored two boundaries to get Blues score at 10 at end of first over. Deepak was heard commenting that Hemant was bowling so slowly that batsman was getting all the time in world to place his stroke. Blue champs were reduced at 14/2 at the end of the dramatic second over. But the most expensive over of the day by Rakesh and sensible batting Yogesh took the final score by Blue Champs to 32 in stipulated quota of 3 overs.

Aditya again started bowling and managed to restrict Bulls at 4/1 at end of first over. Hemant Rajgor was at his best (or worst) during umpiring and was no balling every legitimate delivery. The second over was bowled by Hemant Buwa and there was so much sledging going around with Rupesh and Deepak involved in fierce verbal arguments. Some quick scoring on the field by players (and on paper by statisticians) made some challenging target of 16 of last over. Rupesh came to bowl last over and he was no balled for all possible reasons like bowling short of valid length, directly bowling at batsman’s body and all. Hemant, Deepak came almost to blows with Rupesh. Australians, Bhajjis and Symonds would have felt proud of the acts of these NCL veterans. The final target was 7 of 2 balls and then 6 of last ball. The last ball hit by Rakesh could not even give a tie for Red Bulls and the closest match of series had ended in Blues favor.

Excuse Of the day – Met Vaibhav Babrekar in evening. He was interrogated for his absence on field. In addition to his normal excuse of having returned from office at 1:30 A.M. previous night, he added more flavor by saying that he forgot his cell phone in office that day. Keep it up Vaibhav!

  1. NCL 08-MAR-2009

-Happy Holi to all NES 1988 Batchmates and their families!!!

Date - 08-Mar-2009
Temperature - 26 Degree Celsius
Low Tide
Average Age – 36 years 2 months.

Slight Breeze

Daylight Break Time - 6:37 a.m.

Players - Rakesh, Hemant Rajgor, Hemant Buva, Vaibhav Babrekar, Rupesh, Deepak Kadam, Vishal Patil, Yogesh

Absentees - Aditya (He got up early. He was found watching 3rd One day international between India and NZ at Christchurch. Disciplinary action possible).

Sanjay Patil – Had to attend office

Notes:-

Yogesh –Arrived late at around 7:30 A.M. Indiscipline has started creeping in this sincere fellow.

Deepak – Had to pay attention to his son before he could leave for the ground.

Vishal Patil – He has managed to adjust his timings so that he can attend these NCL sessions. He has been working since ages on preparations of CD for 2nd 1988 batch get together.

Match Report -

Breaking News....For the first time in history of NCL, ball was broken into pieces. Rakesh used broken ball to practice some lofted shots. The last one went to Arabian sea.

1. Hemant Rajyagor uprooted the middle stump of Rupesh on second ball of the morning. The ball spun viciously after pitching.

2. Rakesh has continued his excellent bowling form and grabbed many wickets. He created fear among remaining veterans by bowling beamers directed towards bodies. He was taken off from the bowling after some time.

3. Fielding standards have been constantly deteriorating with Vaibhav and Rupesh dropping as many as 8 catches collectively. Talks are on with Robin Singh and Jonty Rhodes for appointing them as fielding coach of NCL. As per the reports last received these talks have been affected by global recession as NCL sponsor Hemant R. is not willing to pay amount demanded by these coaches.

4. Hemant Buwa had some injury in back in the middle of the game. So he fielded rest the game on short leg by sitting on sand only. He has been referred to Physiotherapist Mr. Sada Pathdukhe from Parnaka.

5. Vishal gathered sand on his clothes as he may has to show it to family to make sure that he was on Suruchi Baag to play only. He was later educated by veterans that it is possible to gather sand on clothes while engaged in other activities as well.

6. Hemant Rajyagor & Bob insisted to do wicket keeping only instead of fielding to avoid getting tired like previous game. Only Hemant’s wish could be fulfilled for obvious reason (He is the sponsor).

Other Notes:-

Anoop should be arriving in India next weekend. NCL committee is evaluating options whether he can be airlifted from Sahar Airport to Suruchi Baag by helicopter so that he can join next NCL session.

Rupesh - Got up late, had to take care of his dog before coming on ground. Arrived late. Bowled his heart out.

Absentees -

Yogesh - Had promised at 6:30 A.M. that he will be coming. Didn't turn up. May be didn't like the category in which he was nominated.

Deepak - Had Fever overnight, joined in hotel.

Vishal Patil - Night Shift, came in hotel while we were having snacks. He brought Phaphada.

Hemant Buva - Was in Indore on Business Trip.

Sanjay Patil - Was in office.

Match Report -

All veterans were in bad shape after gap of 2 months. I will have to check reports to see when was last session of NCL held. I thought it was on 7th December 2009. Also due to low attendance, players had to do a lot of running and bowling. Aditya and Vaibhav dropped 3 catches each. Rakesh was bowling well. Nothing spectacular in batting as batsman was criticised for hitting ball at long distance and at times was asked to fetch the ball. Within 30-40 minutes shoulders started dropping. Balls bowled by Vaibhav started travelling directly to sea. Then there was some catching practice and knocking down stumps session. As tired souls sat on beach to rest, fresh Rupesh appeared and took Aditya back to field. He bowled well for some time and then batted. Vaibhav voluteered as a fielder. The walk back to bikes was difficult but made possible by the fact that we could bring bikes near to beach. Well that fact may bring more NCL players to beach next Sunday. Then it was snacks time and status update on Get Together Report and CD preparation. Vishal joined from his nightshift and promised that CD would be ready soon. Also there are talks of picnic going around...Need some enthusiatic souls to make it happen!!!

Bye Till next NCL session

Regards,

Aditya

Belated Birthday wishes to Suhas Abhyankar, Nilesh Satghare and Kedar Pendse

P.S. So far received overwhelming response for NES Batch Awards 2008-09 Nominations. Anoop has responded till date...

Non Cricket Action steals Show on NCL Winter Session 5

Date - 07-12-2008

Weather Condition - High  Tide, Temperature 19 Degree Celcius - Some hint of cold

Team - Hemant Rajgor, Rakesh, Aditya, Vishal Patil, Deepak Kadam, Vaibhav Babrekar and Saket

Due to some serious procedural lapse, our batch mates forgot to wish Rakesh on his birthday on 2nd  December. All these repenting souls decided to give Rakesh a belated surprise by cutting a cake on beach at 7:00 A.M. Rakesh cut the cake and gave a bite to each of the team member and their faces!

The Next generation of NCL arrives!!

Vaibhav taking his transition and grooming successor talks in office seriously decided to bring his successor (son Saket) for NCL action. Saket bowled some good balls and displayed some good fielding skills. This is really good initiative from Vaibhav which should be followed by all our colleagues. With all of us crossing 36 years, it is time to bring up our successors!!! Good move Vaibhav!!

P.S. Name Saket Vaibhav Babrekar resemble Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar! This may not be sheer coincidence

  1.  NCL 30-NOV-2008

NCL condemns the terrorist attacks on Mumbai. There are no enough words to condemn it and actually I feel India need some action instead of words.

 NCL Match Report - 30 Nov. 2008

Today was the fourth session of first season of winter season of NCL.

Weather Report - The overcast conditions resulted in favourable conditions to the bowlers. But it also resulted in slightly increased temperatures. The temperatures were in range of 25 - 26 degree celcius.

Team Report - Aditya travelled from Borivali and Hemant Buwa/ Sanjay Patil travelled from Vasai Station. Rakesh, Hemant Rajgor, Vaibhav aka Jonty Babrekar, Deepak kadam and guest with Team India T shirt

Match Timing - 7:00 A.M. - 8:15 A.M.

Match Report - Rakesh started batting and played some good strokes. Vaibhav bowled some good spin bowling and captured quite a few wickets. At one time it looked like that he would do a Anil Kumble by capturing all possible wickets. He also took a running caught and bowled wicket. The mystery bowler of the day was the guest with some trickey action. It was very difficult to judge when he was actually releasing the ball. Hemant Buva decided to play his entire over defensively. In second inning Aditya played some good shots and managed to play his entire quota of 2 overs. Deepak Kadam was effective behind stumps as usual and Hemant Buva doing the job as effectively during his absence. Rakesh captured the action on his camera. He could get chance to bowl only during last over of the day. Sanjay Patil will be sent to fielding coach Jonty Rhodes to improve his catching skills. NCL thanks Hemant Rajgor for maintaining NCL cricket kit effectively.

Upcoming events -

As we enter December, discussions have started for the second GET TOGETHER on 25-26 th Jan 2009. The current idea floating is sto have this version of GT as a one day event in a Resort at Arnala. Please let us know your thoughts!!

Aditya's Hat-trick kickstarts NCL Winter season

The Hat-trick by Aditya and great exhibition of technically sound batting by Anoop - the Wall kickstarted the winter season of NCL. The high tide forced the venue to be shifted to adjacent ground which had decent pitch to play on. The outfield was lush green instead of usual sandy one to which NCL veterans are used to. The veterans most of whom have now crossed 36, flew in (travelled) from distant places such as Pune and Borivali to attend this inaugural session of NCL. We hope the local NCL champs take inspiration from this and we hope see much improved attendance from subsequent sessions.

The traditional numbering system resulted in following batting order. Aditya, Rakesh, Rupesh, Yogesh, Dipak, Anoop and Vaibhav. Vaibhav grabbed wickets of Aditya and Rakesh in his first over. Anoop in his first outing was keen to play entire quota of 2 overs and played some technically sound defensive shots. He exploited the flaw in NCL system of leaving lbw decisions to batsman's discretion. Yogesh proved a safe pair of hands as usual at long off by taking 4 catches and Dipak Kadam was at his best behind the stumps. The NCL record books were re-written in second inning. Aditya castled Dipak with third ball of his over. The next ball saw Anoop's attempt of a glance landing in gloves of wicket keeper. Excitement had reached its peak as Aditya ran to deliver the hattrick ball. Vaibhav couldn't judge the reverse swing and the stumps were uprooted. This was Aditya's first hattrick after 22 years. Last time he had taken hat trick in 8th standard during PT hour.

Vaibhav the Bob couldn't move the freely on the outfield as the outfield was different one. He injured his thumb while attempting a powerful shot from Rupesh. The session was over at around 8:30 A.M. as players went to canteen outside our school for delicious snacks.

Anoop is likely to rent helicopter from Avinash Bhosale so that he can attend these weekly NCL sessions by travelling from Pune.

That's all from me for now. I will be back after next session of NCL. Till then good bye.

Regards,

Aditya

Hi All,

Here is an update for 01-June cricket action from Suruchi Baag Beach, Vasai. As cricket world was engrossed in IPL knockout stages, NCL players were also gearing up for probably last outing of the season. Though Sharad Pawar has ruled out probability of two IPL seasons in a year, NCL is likely to have another winter season during Diwali vacation. All of you will be kept updated on it.

The station gang (Hemant Buwa and Sanjay Patil) didn't join the action this Sunday due to some outstation commitments. Vishal Patil reappeared after last Sunday's photo shoot. The players for the day – Vaibhav, Deepak, Rakesh, Yogesh, Atul Shinde, Rupesh, Hemant Rajgor, Aditya, Vishal Patil and Rajesh Kondalkar.  The weather was pleasant with cool breeze coming from sea, which was conducive for swing bowling. Yours truly was in excellent form in fielding and took stunning catches of Yogesh, Rakesh and Rupesh. I continued this form to batting and hit some skiers. Atul Shinde couldn't recreate last month's magic and was out after hitting one big six. Atul Shinde wore orange T shirt in NCL's answer to IPL orange cap. Deepak Kadam was in excellent keeping mood as he had 4 batsman stump-outs. Rakesh and Vishal were busy capturing the action live on cell phones. Very soon we will have another CD out with this action.

The team headed towards hotel Umesh for weekly breakfast session. Ashutosh Patil had left dried Chikoos for Vaibhav Babrekar at Parking lot. It is believed that dried chikoos when taken along with milk improves cricketing skills.

This might be my last outing in this season of NCL. Thanks for receiving all these mails without any complaints. I will be back next season, till then this is Aditya signing off from Suruchi Baag.

Hi All,

Here is summary of NCL cricket action from Suruchi Baag on 25-05-2008.

NCL Players recovering from Injuries
Deepak Kadam has partially recovered from his leg injury. He appeared after a gap of almost one month. He did little bit of batting and bowling. Vaibhav Babrekar had returned to action last week (18-05) itself as he was worried about team's visit to his residence in case he didn't turn up. Rakesh was back from his Mount Abu vacation.

Team Meeting 1
There was a meeting conducted before game started. Our group met Vaygankar Sir during this week and finalized that we will be sponsoring fans and tubelights for 18 classrooms in new building being constructed. This information was shared with team and their inputs on points such as amount per head to be contributed and getting quotes from different contacts were sought.

Cricket Report
Team was visibly upset with shock defeat of Mumbai Indians at hands on Delhi Daredevils on Saturday night. And it took some efforts to bring them on the ground. Vishal Patil was absent for the first time during NCL session and it was informed that he has gone for modeling photo session. To make to sure that there are no suspicions, he was the photographer and not model.

The pitch was covered with thick layer of oily substance. Soon that substance appeared on players' hands via bat and ball. It became increasing difficult to bat under these situations. Vaibhav (Jonty) Babrekar was at it again when it dived full length to grab a skier. He grassed (or sanded) the catch and had the oil layer applied on his body. We had to hear complaints from him about it for the remaining part of the game. Aditya took a stunning one handed catch after running 5 meters ahead. The third and last innings was played with batting with non-regular hand. Sanjay Patil (Lloyd) played well in this inning.

Participants: Aditya, Rupesh, Rakesh, Yogesh, Hemant Buwa, Sanjay Patil, Hemant Rajgor, Deepak Kadam, Vaibhav Babrekar, Hemant(Guest)

Team Meeting 2
Again team convened to discuss the school contribution. The details were finalized. Hemant Rajgor/Deepak and Yogesh from boys' (???) side have started contacting our batch mates. From girls side it would be Medha and other volunteers. In case anyone in this distribution list has any questions / suggestions please free to contact Hemant / Deepak or me. Then team headed towards hotel for weekly dose of Puri Bhaji, Jalebi and Chai. We requested for less oily bhaji as we already had some oil from beach on our hands  .

Few Notes
On serious note, the pollution is taking its toll on all natural resources. It is really sad to see most of our natural resources becoming polluted. It is time we take our environment seriously. That reminds me of World Environment Day (5th June) next week.

I couldn't send last week's report due to some technical issues. I will see whether it can be send in this week.

This season of NCL is coming to an end soon. Most likely next Sunday (1st June) will be the last session for this year as team will take monsoon break. It has been great experience so far playing with school mates at 6:00 A.M. on summer morning and just forgetting all tensions of life. For those of you who weren't not able to join us so far, I will request you to join us on next Sunday morning at 6:00 A.M. (sorry 5:45 A.M. as per Rakesh) as sun is rising further early.

Finally 1st June will be the first day when 100% compliance to E-Ticketing is expected. There was an article in this weekend's TOI about AI's state of compliance to this IATA mandate. So I hope that I am at right location on next Sunday morning.

Hi All,

Here is summary of NCL cricket action from Suruchi Baag on 11-05-2008.

Injury continues to haunt NCL

NCL has been severely hit by injuries. Deepak Kadam has not recovered from his leg injury. Vaibhav Babrekar's swollen finger continues to make him unavailable for cricket action. A surprise visit to their residences is planned next weekend to check the actual status of their injuries.

NCL players found sleeping at home

Hemant Rajgor went back to bed after handing over the cricket kit to team at 6:10 A.M. Also couple of other guys had switched off their phones early in the Sunday morning. Vishal Patil is currently working on getting all landline numbers of such guys so that they can be at least woken up on Sunday morning.

Cricket Report
Suhas Abhyankar graced NCL with his presence. He had to attend his duty in Vasai Janata Bank at 9:00 A.M. so he left after playing couple of innings. The cricket was on dull side as hitter Atul Shinde didn't join the gang. Rakesh tried his best with some big hits. Vishal made action little interesting by batting with left hand in first innings. During second innings we noticed that his right handed batting was not much different than left handed batting. Yogesh was sincere as usual at long off and bringing back all those balls from sea. Aditya after losing his wicket quickly in first innings, made a deal with Rupesh to let him play for at least one over in second innings. This is first incident of match fixing in NCL. The fielding standard was pathetic with so many catches going down.

Participants: Suhas, Aditya, Rupesh, Rakesh, Yogesh, Hemant Buwa, Sanjay Patil, Vishal Patil, Hemant (Guest)

Since I had to leave beach early (at 7:30 A.M.) the following part of report is sent by Rakesh.

Today after regular cricket, team played BOX CRICKET with "EK TAPPA OUT" as suggested by Hemant Buwa. Team Really enjoyed the game very much.  Afterwards team sat in HOTEL SURESH.
Please note that this sitting should not be literally translated to 'Basuya' in Marathi. Then Vishal Patil invited the team to his house as he was alone. Cricketing activities for the day end here.

NCL Vision
After attending a 2-day training session last week, I am convinced that we need to have one vision for NCL. So here is my attempt.

To form a team of fit and talented young men (in their late thirties) to participate in 2008 season tournament in Vasai.

Do respond with your versions of vision!!

Hi All,

Here is the summary of cricket action from Suruchi Baag on 04-05-2008

Injury hits NCL

NCL has been severely hit by injuries. Deepak Kadam is undergoing treatment on his leg. Initial report suggests that it may be hairline fracture. Unconfirmed reports indicate that it is an attempt from him to get himself compared with Sachin Tendulkar. Vaibhav (Jonty/Bob) Babrekar has reported swollen finger and visited Doctor yesterday. The detail reports are awaited.

NCL players found partying in Usgaon

While Deepak Daredevils captain is nursing his injuries, Rakesh Champs captain was found partying in Usgaon with his friends on Sunday morning. A special meeting of disciplinary committee has been conveyed to decide the action on Rakesh.

Cricket Report

NCL got more professional with inclusion of cricket stumps as last week there were some confusions about clean bowled decisions. It is suspected that Hemant Buwa studied video clips of Rupesh bowling as Rupesh didn't allow anyone to bat more than 2-3 balls last week. The result was amazing. Rupesh could capture only one wicket. Whether it should be attributed to improved batting skills of team led by Hemant Buwa or to inclusion of stumps is a debatable issue.

Two new players (Dyanesh and Atul Shinde) joined action on Sunday morning. Thus the players list was Dnyanesh, Hemant Buwa, Hemant Rajgor, Vishal Patil, Yogesh, Rupesh, Atul, Rajesh Kondalkar, Aditya and guest (another Hemant). Atul Shinde displayed amazing batting skills and played some awesome shots on onside clearing boundary with ease all the time. One of hits covered distance of 73.5 meters. Dnyanesh fielding at square leg had run of his life to bring back all those balls hit.

After warming up with two innings, a 4 over match (3 balls per over) was played.
Team 1
Dnaynesh, Aditya, Atul, Hemant, Hemant.

Team 2
Rupesh, Vishal, Yogesh, Rajesh, Hemant.

Team 2 batted first scoring 17 runs with usual arguments about accuracy of scores between two sides. Team 1 openers Atul and Aditya scored required runs in 2 overs (6 balls) with ease. Atul again put the beach on fire with his hits.

Special Request

Anil Jadhav has requested extending the cricket action on Saturday as well. Organization committee is seriously considering this request.

I will be back next week with updates from Suruchi Baag. Till then Good Bye!!

Thanks and Regards

Match Summary

Match I

Match II

Again Rakesh won the toss and decided to bat first. Two mighty sixes from Rakesh in one over of Hemant Rajgor almost sealed the match for Daredevils. The champs faught hard but failed to clear the fences which was required for chasing at run rate of more than 9 runs per over.

Highlights

Brilliant bowling and fielding from Bob. The high tide swallowed two balls. The pitch was similar to one at Green Park with too many rough patches. Champs had to move to adjacent pitch in the middle of the innings.

>Hi All, The NCL will be back with action on Sunday morning at 6:15 A.M. The weather forecast - Temp - 23-25 Degree Celcius. No forecast of rain. We will have high tide during playing hours. So we need packed offside field. The high tide would result in rise in ground water level which will keep the ball low. It may help the spinners.  Thanks and RegardsAditya Patil
