Hazards Pigeons bring!!

In large country such as India, there are known limitations of the law enforcing authorities, primarily due to disproportionate size of the population they need to supervise. It is practically impossible for them to control each and every behavior of individuals / groups which brings nuisance to the society. As a result it is expected that the citizens show common sense in their social lives so as to maintain the quality of the same intact.

Unfortunately the civic sense is on declining path for many decades in India. Bullying seems to be the most effective way of getting the things done in a way any individual wants to do. And if you are able to supplement it with religious or regional believes, then it becomes practically impossible to stop that practice however detrimental it is to the quality of the social life. Obviously there are social forums which try their best to challenge such behaviors and educate the individuals / groups involved in such practices.

Feeding pigeons with grain in the open places in cities is such one such recent trend which has been picking up very rapidly. While on one hand the Indian cities are facing challenge of drastic decline in the bird population, (The species such as sparrows, crows have seen significant reduction) at the same time pigeon population is on increasing trend at the alarming proportion.

Doves and Pigeons constitute the bird family Columbidae. These are primarily known as messengers of peace. But with the recent problems associated with them, their image as messengers of peace has almost being forgotten from many individuals.

But one needs to be very well aware of the health hazards pigeons bring to the civil life when their population increases beyond moderate proportion. These are not so active birds, falling on the boundary of being called lazy.
Pigeon droppings bring health hazards to the citizens in the area. Pigeons have been associated with a variety of diseases, including histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus that grows in pigeon droppings. Pigeons also keep on making that irritating noise throughout the day.

Having listed all the hazards pigeons bring to civil life, still we need to remember that they are not intellectual species. So the objective of this post is to educate the folks who feed pigeons on regular basis. Please remember that pigeons have excellent memories when it comes to food sources. They'll constantly return to places where they have human accomplices. Supplementing this feeding practice with the tremendously high reproduction rate of this species becomes very severe health hazard for the citizens. The severity increases further in crowded cities like Mumbai where citizens are already struggling for space.

My sincere request to the folks who are involved in this hazardous practice of feeding pigeons in cities. They should stop it immediately which should be bring some respite to the affected citizens. If you have some faith, trust factor due to which you are involved in this practice please keep these pigeons in the comfort of your homes.
